Students first reported him at SMR — a cat with what looked like a broken tail, keeping his distance from everyone who came close. He was terrified of people, and it took a full month of quiet visits before anyone managed to get a clear photo of his face.
Patience is most of the job. Slowly, Astro learned that the students who kept coming back weren’t a threat. He began to let his guard down, and then came the shift that told us he trusted us — he started rolling over to show his belly whenever someone crouched near him.
He made friends on his own terms too, working his way into the campus’s cat community even though the other cats didn’t take to him immediately. Underneath the caution, he’d always been a social cat waiting for the right circumstances.
But his tail hadn’t healed on its own — it had gone necrotic, and it was clear he needed surgery he couldn’t get without help. The campus community fundraised for his amputation, covering a surgery he wouldn’t have survived without. He recovered fully, and today he lives in a forever home — with a best friend by his side.
